Five W&L footballers earn academic laurels from all districts



LEXINGTON, Virginia – College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) released their college football teams for all 2021 Division III districts on Thursday afternoon and Washington and Lee selected five players to the squad of 27 members of District 5.

The senior running back Alex wertz (Sterling, Virginia / Dominion), senior defensive backs Kyle Wood (Charlotte, North Carolina / Providence Day) and Dean Johnson (Atlanta, Ga. / Marist), and junior defensive linemen Rob Harvey (Lenk im Simmental, Switzerland / Gymnasium Thun) and Robert poindexter (Atlanta, GA / Lovett) were all named to the All-District varsity squad for the first time in their careers.

Specializing in biochemistry, Wertz has appeared in nine games this season and is the team’s third-best rusher with 534 yards and four touchdowns in 79 carries. He also has 14 kickoff returns for an average of 31.6 and another touchdown, while his 990 versatile yards lead the team. For his career, Wertz totaled 1,206 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns averaging 5.9 yards per carry. His career-high kickoff average of 28.0 ranks second all-time at W&L.

Wood has started all 10 games this season as a cornerback, totaling 28 tackles and two breakouts. The major accountant has played in 25 career competitions and claims 54 tackles, one interception and six broken assists.

Johnson has also started all 10 games on safety this season. With a degree in business administration, he ranks third on the team in tackles with 45 saves. He also has five stoppages, three interceptions and a forced fumble. Over his four years, Johnson had 125 tackles, 16 missed passes, seven interceptions, three forced fumbles and one fumble recovered.

A graduate in economics, Harvey played all 10 defensive games this fall, totaling 38 tackles, including 11 for a loss (-29). He also has five sacks (-17) and a forced fumble. Harvey played eight games in 2019, adding one more tackle for a total of 39 career tackles.

Poindexter has started all 10 games on defense this season. The economics major has 39 tackles, including a top team of 11.5 tackles for a loss (-38). His 5.5 sacks (-24) also lead the team. Poindexter has played 19 career games, recording 59 tackles and 6.5 sacks.

The criteria for the CoSIDA All-District program state that a player must have a second-year academic standing, be a beginner or a significant reserve, and claim a GPA of at least 3.30 on a 4.0 scale. Washington and Lee is a member of District 5, which includes players from small colleges in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Puerto Rico, from South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.

The five players will now move on to the national ballot where they could be elected to win the Academic All-America laurels.

Washington and Lee are currently 8-2 overall and open the game in the NCAA Division III tournament on Saturday against Mount Union at 12:00 p.m. ET. The Generals won the 2021 ODAC title with a 5-1 league record.
